Oil Removal Systems

World Technologies designs integrated oil–water separation systems that combine oil skimmers, Corrugated Plate Interceptors (CPI) and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to match the oil form, solids loading and discharge or reuse objective of each facility.

Our solutions support industries including oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, oleochemicals, food and beverage, distilleries, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, marine facilities and vehicle or equipment washing. Each system is engineered around actual wastewater characteristics, available footprint and operating requirements.

How the Combined Oil Removal Process Works

A staged treatment train prevents one unit from carrying the entire contaminant load. The exact sequence is selected after wastewater testing and may include equalisation, pH adjustment or chemical conditioning.

1Collection & Equalisation

Balances variable flow, oil concentration and suspended solids before separation.

2Oil Skimming

Recovers floating oil early and reduces the load on downstream equipment.

3CPI Separation

Inclined corrugated plates separate free oil and settleable solids by gravity.

4DAF Polishing

Microbubbles float fine solids, dispersed oil and conditioned flocs for removal.

5Treated Water

Clarified water proceeds to discharge, biological treatment or further reuse treatment.

Three Core Oil Removal Technologies

World Technologies can provide each technology as an individual package or combine them as a complete oily wastewater treatment system.

Oil Skimmers

Belt, tube or floating oil skimmers continuously attract and remove oil from the water surface. They are commonly installed in collection pits, equalisation tanks, wash-water sumps and separator chambers.

  • Reduces free-oil loading before CPI or DAF treatment
  • Supports recovery of concentrated oil with comparatively low water carry-over
  • Simple operation with options for fixed or floating installation
  • Suitable for intermittent or continuous oil ingress

Gravity oil–water separation

Corrugated Plate Interceptor (CPI)

A CPI uses inclined corrugated plate packs to increase the effective separation area within a compact footprint. Oil droplets rise and coalesce, while heavier solids settle into the sludge zone.

  • Effective for free oil and settleable suspended solids
  • No moving parts within the plate separation section
  • Compact alternative to a conventional gravity separator
  • Available as a skid-mounted package with oil and sludge collection

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)

DAF introduces fine air bubbles into conditioned wastewater. The bubbles attach to suspended solids, flocs and dispersed oil, increasing buoyancy so the material rises for surface skimming. Heavier solids are removed from the lower sludge zone.

  • Handles dispersed oil, grease, fine suspended solids and low-density flocs
  • Can incorporate coagulation, flocculation and pH control
  • Compact hydraulic loading and automated surface-skimming options
  • Useful before biological treatment, membranes or final polishing

Selecting the Right Oil Removal System

The correct technology depends on whether the oil is floating, dispersed or emulsified. Laboratory characterisation and treatability testing are important because stable emulsions may require chemical conditioning before physical separation.

TechnologyPrimary treatment roleBest suited forTypical integration
Oil SkimmerRecovers floating free oil from the water surfaceTanks, pits, sumps and equalisation basinsUpstream of CPI, DAF or biological treatment
CPIGravity separation of free oil and settleable solidsOily wastewater with separable droplets and solidsAfter screening/skimming and before DAF or polishing
DAFFlotation of fine solids, conditioned flocs and dispersed oilVariable industrial effluent requiring enhanced clarificationAfter equalisation and chemical conditioning; before downstream treatment

Actual removal performance, chemical demand and treated-water quality depend on influent characteristics and the agreed design basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one oil removal technology treat every type of oily wastewater?

No. Oil skimmers are best for floating free oil, CPI units separate gravity-separable oil and solids, and DAF systems target finer suspended material and dispersed oil after suitable conditioning. A combined process is often more reliable for variable industrial effluent.

Can CPI remove emulsified oil?

CPI is intended primarily for free oil that can separate by gravity. Stable emulsified oil may require pH adjustment, emulsion breaking, coagulation and flocculation, followed by DAF or another polishing process.

Where should an oil skimmer be installed?

Oil skimmers are commonly installed in collection pits, equalisation tanks or dedicated separator chambers where floating oil can accumulate without excessive turbulence.

Can the treated water be reused?

Potentially. Reuse depends on the final water-quality requirement. CPI or DAF effluent may need biological treatment, filtration, activated carbon, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis or disinfection before reuse.
