Multi Effect Evaporator (MEE) Systems
World Technologies designs and supplies multi effect evaporator systems for concentrating high-TDS industrial wastewater, recovering reusable condensate and supporting Zero Liquid Discharge plants.
An MEE combines two or more evaporation effects so vapour generated in one effect becomes the heating medium for the next. Reusing latent heat reduces fresh-steam demand compared with a single-effect evaporator and enables economical concentration of difficult wastewater streams.

How a Multi Effect Evaporator Works
The process is engineered around feed chemistry, flow, total dissolved solids, boiling-point elevation, scaling tendency, heat sensitivity and the required final concentrate. A typical industrial MEE and ZLD workflow follows these stages:
Wastewater is balanced, screened and chemically conditioned for stable evaporation.
Recovered heat raises feed temperature before it enters the first effect.
Steam boils part of the water and produces vapour for the next effect.
Pressure and boiling temperature decrease while vapour energy is reused.
Final vapour is condensed and assessed for reuse or further polishing.
Concentrate proceeds to AFTD, crystallisation, drying or authorised disposal.
Why Multiple Effects Reduce Energy Demand
Only the first effect normally receives live steam. Vapour from that effect transfers heat to the next effect, which operates at a lower pressure and boiling temperature. The sequence continues until last-effect vapour is condensed.
- Better steam economy than single-effect evaporation
- Vacuum operation for lower boiling temperatures
- Useful for high-salinity and non-volatile dissolved solids
- Configurable for forward, backward or mixed-feed operation
MEE Configurations and Design Options
The correct evaporator configuration depends on viscosity, solids content, fouling, crystal formation and product sensitivity. World Technologies evaluates the complete feed profile before equipment selection.
High heat-transfer efficiency and short residence time for relatively clean, heat-sensitive liquids.
Vapour lift supports circulation in suitable low-viscosity, non-fouling services.
High recirculation velocity helps manage scaling, crystallising and higher-solids feeds.
Mechanical wiping maintains a thin film for viscous, fouling or highly concentrated products.
Evaporator System Components
A complete package can include feed and balance tanks, preheaters, calandrias or heat exchangers, vapour separators, circulation pumps, surface condensers, vacuum equipment, condensate tanks, chemical-cleaning facilities and PLC controls.
Materials are selected for chloride concentration, temperature, pH and corrosion risk. Depending on the service, construction may include suitable stainless steels, duplex alloys, nickel alloys or protected carbon steel.
Final metallurgy and performance guarantees require representative feed analysis and design verification.

Role of MEE in a Zero Liquid Discharge System
Why Industries Adopt ZLD
- Meet stringent limits for salts, toxic elements and other difficult pollutants
- Reduce freshwater dependency and improve internal water reuse
- Avoid long-distance transport of large liquid-waste volumes
- Support sustainability and site water-security objectives
- Recover water and, where viable, useful salts or by-products
Conventional Thermal ZLD
- MEE commonly recovers most of the remaining water as condensate
- Concentrate may be sent to crystallisation or an agitated thin film dryer
- Separated solids can be dewatered before compliant disposal
- Recovered heat and condensate integration improve overall efficiency
- Final configuration depends on disposal and salt-recovery requirements

Agitated Thin Film Dryer (AFTD)
An AFTD can receive concentrated liquor from the MEE and convert it into a high-solids cake, flakes or dry powder. A rotor spreads feed into a continuously renewed thin film over the heated wall, supporting rapid heat transfer and a short residence time.
- Suitable for viscous and strongly concentrated liquids
- Can operate under vacuum for temperature-sensitive streams
- Vapour is separated and condensed for possible recovery
- Reduces the liquid volume requiring off-site disposal
Crystallisation and Salt Recovery
Where complete ZLD or salt recovery is required, MEE concentrate can feed a crystalliser or forced-circulation evaporation stage. Supersaturation is controlled so dissolved salts form crystals that can be separated by a centrifuge or filter press. Mixed salts must be characterised before reuse or disposal.
Crystallisation performance is influenced by solubility, temperature, competing ions, organics and boiling-point elevation. Bench testing or pilot trials may be needed for complex industrial effluents.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a multi effect evaporator?
A multi effect evaporator uses two or more evaporation stages at progressively lower pressures. Vapour from one effect heats the next, reducing fresh-steam consumption while concentrating dissolved solids.
How is an MEE different from a Zero Liquid Discharge plant?
An MEE is a major concentration stage within many ZLD plants. Complete ZLD may also require pretreatment, membrane recovery, crystallisation, drying, solids separation and condensate polishing.
Which MEE configuration is best for industrial wastewater?
Selection depends on feed solids, viscosity, fouling, scaling, heat sensitivity and desired concentration. Falling-film, forced-circulation and agitated-thin-film configurations serve different applications.
Can MEE condensate be reused?
Often yes, but reuse depends on volatile contaminants and the required water quality. Condensate may require polishing by biological treatment, activated carbon, membranes or another suitable process.
How many effects should an MEE have?
More effects can improve steam economy but increase capital cost and temperature-area requirements. The optimum number is established from utilities, boiling-point elevation, operating hours and lifecycle economics.
How are scaling and fouling controlled?
Control measures can include pretreatment, pH adjustment, antiscalant dosing, forced circulation, suitable velocities, online monitoring and planned cleaning-in-place. Feed testing is essential for reliable design.
Can World Technologies upgrade an existing evaporator?
Yes. World Technologies can assess heat-transfer performance, vacuum stability, scaling, steam consumption, condensate quality, controls and downstream concentrate handling to identify practical improvements.
